During this year Devon Centocow Link is helping to support one of our partner organisations, the Creighton Sunflower Project.
Creighton is a small farming community some fourteen kilometres down the valley from Centocow. Here, one of our dear friends and partner organisation, the Creighton Sunflower Project is based. From her office in a lively pre-school which welcomes young children from all cultures Debbie Rowe is the inspiration of many thriving support groups which give hope and relief to many. The hardships, which are the legacy of a troubled history of the Zulus from colonialism, apartheid and more recently the Aids pandemic ,must not be underestimated.
‘We’re committed to helping women break free from the cycle of abuse and forging a brighter future for both them and their families ‘
Through our life skills training programme for women, we equip the incredible ladies at our shelter with valuable skills in computer literacy, baking, sewing, soap making, gardening and cooking
Another project is the hands on vegetable garden project. Debbie says,
‘We see the gold in the dirt! Our hands-on-vegetable garden project isn’t just about growing fresh produce for the shelter, it’s also a powerful tool for healing from trauma.
Every vegetable is lovingly planted, nurtured, and hand-picked by the incredible ladies at our shelter’
There has long been a women’s refuge and the availability of counselling services for women who have experienced abuse and violence. In 2021 the Men2Boys project was set up. Interactive programmes, support and educate men who have unfortunately suffered abuse or exploitation. They, in turn play a vital role in the community working with younger boys, and fostering awareness about abuse. Since I last visited there is a play therapy unit and the coffee shack is a welcoming space for down time and relaxation.
